Namun keadaan itu berakhir ketika Naruto berhasil melakukan "trik khusus" pada Kakashi dan akhirnya membuat mereka berdua lulus ujian itu untuk kedua kalinya.Setelah itu, Naruto dan kawan-kawannya diberi misi level S untuk menolong Gaara, sang Kazekage, dari tangan organisasi misterius bernama Akatsuki. Tim 7 lalu mengejar Akatsuki, ditemani Chiyo, seorang wanita tua yang misterius. Tim 7 lalu menemukan bahwa Gaara berhasil dikalahkan seseorang bernama Deidara. Deidara lalu membawa Gaara yang tak berdaya ke sebuah gua untuk diambil Bijuu di dalam tubuhnya. Tim 7 dibantu tim 9 pimpinan Guru guy mendobrak masuk persembunyian Akatsuki dan melawan mereka.
